Scale confuses almost everyone at first, largely because the hobby uses two naming systems at once — ratios like 1/12 and 1/6, and informal names like "6-inch" and "12-inch". They describe the same thing.
What the numbers mean
A scale ratio says how much smaller a model is than the real thing. 1/12 scale is one twelfth of life size, so a six-foot person becomes roughly six inches. 1/6 scale is one sixth, making the same person about twelve inches. 1/6 is double the height — but because volume grows in three dimensions, a 1/6 figure is roughly eight times the bulk. That difference is far more dramatic in person than the numbers suggest.
How to tell which you own
Measure the figure standing, head to heel. Five to seven inches puts you in 1/12. Eleven to thirteen inches puts you in 1/6. If it falls between, check the packaging — some ranges sit deliberately outside the standard because the character is unusually tall or short.
For a loose part with no figure to compare against, look at fastenings. Molded-on detail and simplified fastenings usually indicate 1/12.
Which to collect
Neither is better; they suit different priorities.
1/12 suits collectors with limited display space, or anyone who wants a large collection or full scenes. It is also where the mainstream 6-inch lines live — superhero, sci-fi and action ranges — so crossover with an existing collection is easy, and it is by far the more active scale for customizing.
1/6 suits collectors who prioritize detail and realism.
Can you mix them?
Not within one scene — the size difference reads as an error. Parts do not interchange either; a 1/6 helmet on a 1/12 figure is comically oversized. Keep the scales separate and buy accordingly.
